About POST Newspapers
POST Newspapers is one of Perth’s most respected sources of independent, local news. We are locally owned and editorially independent, and we have built our reputation over nearly 50 years on quality journalism and genuine community connection. People of Perth’s western suburbs frequently say, “Everybody reads the POST”. This is not a company slogan, it’s a reflection of the local sense of reader ownership. The POST is our paper, they say. We are a trusted, independent voice that puts its community first.
As we approach our 50th year, we are investing in our commercial capability to ensure the POST continues to grow, thrive, and serve our communities well into the future.
The Opportunity
POST Newspapers is seeking an exceptional General Manager / Head of Sales to take ownership of our commercial function and play a leading role in the organisation’s next phase of growth. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who combines strategic thinking with the hunger to be in market — building relationships, winning business and driving revenue.
You will be a senior commercial leader. You will set the direction for sales, develop and manage key client and agency relationships, oversee day-to-day commercial operations, and work closely with editorial and production to ensure the business runs effectively and profitably. The full scope of the role will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.
This is a role with genuine significance — the kind that comes around rarely in Perth’s independent media sector. The right person will have both the experience to hit the ground running and the ambition to leave a lasting mark.
Key Responsibilities
Sales and Revenue
Lead all commercial sales activity, with personal accountability for revenue targets
Build and manage an advertiser pipeline across local, regional and national clients
Develop advertising packages, rate cards and sponsorship propositions across print and digital platforms
Manage and grow existing client relationships while actively prospecting for new business
Identify partnership and revenue opportunities beyond traditional display advertising
General Management
Oversee the day-to-day commercial operations of the business in partnership with editorial and production
Manage budgets, PandL reporting and commercial KPIs
Contribute to strategic planning, bringing a commercial perspective to editorial and operational decisions — without compromising POST’s editorial independence
Build and lead a small commercial team as the business grows, including hiring and performance management
Brand and Community Presence
Represent POST in market as a credible, trusted ambassador for independent local journalism
Develop and maintain relationships with local businesses, councils and community organisations
Understand and articulate the POST value proposition to advertisers and partners with conviction
About You
You are an experienced media professional with deep knowledge of the Perth market. You understand how community newspapers work — commercially, editorially and operationally — and you believe in what they stand for. You have a track record of driving revenue in a print and/or digital media environment, and you bring an established network of advertiser and agency relationships.
You are self-directed and resourceful. You are as comfortable in front of a client as you are in a budget review, and you understand that sustainable journalism depends on a strong commercial foundation.
Essential experience and attributes: Proven success in media sales, with strong preference for newspaper experience. Senior commercial or management experience, including budget accountability and team leadership. An active, current network of Perth-based advertisers, agencies and community stakeholders. Thorough knowledge of the Perth media landscape, including print, digital and community channels. High degree of personal initiative — a self-starter who creates momentum independently.
Bringing a proactive mindset with an ability to critically assess operational efficiency and desire to improve the same. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills; the ability to represent a trusted brand with credibility. Genuine alignment with POST’s values: editorial independence, accuracy, and community service
Desirable: Experience leading or contributing to a commercial launch or major growth initiative
Familiarity with digital advertising products, content marketing and audience development alongside core print products.
Why POST?
A senior role with genuine commercial authority and room to grow alongside the business.
The opportunity to shape the strategic direction of an organisation with a strong brand and clear purpose
Work alongside a team that takes journalism seriously and measures success by community impact, not just clicks
Competitive remuneration including base salary and performance incentives, commensurate with experience
Be part of an important moment for independent media in Perth
Your cover letter should address your experience in the Perth media market and what draws you to a senior role at POST Newspapers.
This is a confidential appointment. All applications will be handled with strict discretion.
POST Newspapers is an equal opportunity employer.
